Good dental health is an absolute must if you want your teeth to last a life time. However, most people ignore elementary facts of oral hygiene and suffer the consequence of it. All this can be avoided if they take a few steps to maintain oral hygiene and try their level best to stick to them.

5 Steps to Maintain Oral Hygiene
Step1: Eating healthy is the first step which you should take and ask your children (if you are a parent) to take as well. As a rule, avoid sugary foods (especially those which are sticky). These foods tend to get accumulated in between teeth and gums and become breeding ground for enamel eroding bacteria. A result of this is cavities which are ugly-looking and can be painful as well.
Eat foods which are rich in calcium and other minerals. These help in taking care of your teeth. Avoid foods such as black coffee or black tea. Their consumption results in fluorination (loss of fluoride from teeth). Also avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages.

Step 2: Develop a habit of maintaining oral hygiene. This can be done in two ways-by regularly brushing your teeth twice a day and by flossing after every meal. Also, adopt the habit of properly brushing your teeth. The correct method to brush your teeth is in an up-down motion (and not sideways). Further, use a mouthwash to floss your teeth and always use toothpaste which has fluoride in it.

Step 3: Do some self assessment of your teeth. Look out for signs for cavity, injured, damaged or bleeding gums, sensitivity to hot or cold things, and bad breath. If you find these signs then it is best to immediately see a dentist. This timely visit to the dentist can save a lot of pain and money.

Step 4: Pay a regular visit to the dentist. He/she is the best person to assess the success of steps taken by you. If things are not working then adequate measures can be adopted by him/her to stop the rot inside your mouth. A visit every six months is considered good for teens and adults. Further, young children, 1 year and above must be taken to the dentist every six months.

Step 5: Quit the habit of Smoking: Smoking or chewing tobacco is dangerous not only for the lungs but also for the mouth as well. The nicotine inside tobacco gets accumulated in between the teeth and allows breeding of harmful bacteria. In extreme cases tobacco consumption can result in oral cancer as well.

Following the above 5 steps can help you retain the beautiful smile which nature has given you. Even otherwise, clean teeth and healthy gums can give your confidence a massive boost.
